The Perfect Sugar Cookie Recipe

It’s the best time of the year to bring out the baker in you and make delicious sugar cookies. Sugar cookies are a buttery classic that make a delicious treat and they are super easy to make. Try this sugar cookie recipe and enjoy your treats plain Jane or decorate them with icing to make them festive.

 

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • ½ cup (1 stick) of unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Assorted candies, sprinkles or coloured sugars for decorating (optional)

 

The Fun Part

Step 1 – In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt together.

Step 2 – With an electric mixer, mix butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. With the mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture from step 1 and beat until combined.

Step 3 – Divide the dough into half and flatten into disks. Wrap each in plastic and freeze until firm – up to 20 minutes.

Step 4 – Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 5 – Roll out 1/8 inch thick between two sheets of floured parchment and cut shapes with your cookie cutters.

Step 6 – Use a spatula to transfer your cookies onto your baking sheets. Reroll scraps and repeat with remaining dough.

Step 7 – Bake until edges are golden – 10 to 18 minutes depending on the size.

Step 8 – Cool cookies for 5 minutes and decorate as desired.

Step 9 – ENJOY!
