As the Toronto International Film Festival gears up for another jam packed year of press junkets, red carpet galas and film screenings, Toronto will be the center of attraction for A-List stars to be seen and heard. The festival, which has been a platform to showcase international and local filmmakers and talent, has generated buzz worthy attention year after year, attracting movie goers and film buffs alike into theatre seats.

Here are some much-anticipated films to look out for at this year’s festival.

Long Time Running

Canadian directors Jennifer Baichwell and Nicholas de Pencier bring the Man Machine Poem’s tour to life in this documentary about Canadian band The Tragically Hip and their emotional journey with frontman Gord Downie as he battles with brain cancer. TIFF Artistic director Cameron Bailey eloquently summed up the film to CBC news by saying “it is a document of one of the great cultural moments of our time.”

First They Killed My Father

Actor, humanitarian and activisit Angelina Jolie co-produces and directs this adaptation of Luong Ung memoir, which follows her traumatic childhood living in Cambodia under the murderous regime of Rhmer Rouge. Angelina Jolie will be gracing the TIFF stage on Sunday September 10th to discuss First They Killed My Father and The Breadwinner, another film executive produced by Jolie and slated to be screened at the festival.

The Leisure Seeker

Based on the novel by Michael Zoodorian, acting legends Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland team up to play an elderly couple who decide to have one bittersweet final road trip in lieu of their terminal illnesses. Dame Helen Mirren will be gracing the TIFF stage on Saturday September 9th to take a closer look at the film and share some intimate conversations with the audience.

The Mountain Between Us

Director Hany Abu-Assad brings Charles Martin’s novel to the big screen with this gripping adventure about a surgeon (Idris Elba) and a journalist (Kate Winslet) who must rely on eachother for survival after their plane crashes in the wilderness. Shot entirely in Western Canada, this powerful drama will premiere at the festival on Saturday September 9th.

Battle of the Sexes

Steve Carrell and Emma Stone join forces to recreate the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobbie Riggs. Riddled with fun costumes and enjoyable performances by Carrell and Stone, this film also delves into sexism and feminism during the sexual revolution.
